At the time I was playing the dating game...
I never once thought it was easy but today when I hear my single gal pals talk about dating online I realize it really was easy. You just put yourself out there at work, your church, sports and of course my go to favorite The Bar. (Yes, met Hubby....) Now when I talk with my pals I am constantly saying, "What does that mean?" So I got quite a kick out of this 17th Century dating ritual called Bundling. (Please read to the end for my verification!)
If today's complicated dating world disturbs you, imaging being a young woman in love in 17th Century Wales. You can't wait to begin your life with your beau but there are a few things you need to do first.
Step 1: Invite your date home to meet your parents.
Step 2: Watch in horror as your mother ties you up from the feet to waist in a heavy sack.
Step 3: Get into bed fully clothed next to your date under the watchful eyes of your parents who place a board between you and tuck you in for the night. Romantic Bliss!
Supporters, back in the day said this was a good way to know your prospective mate and judging your compatibility. Letting you choose. Doubters said this became possible as a way to rent the other side of the bed to travelers to make money. They actual made beds with board's installed. Either way you can judge for your self but here is the my pay off.
I read that Bundling had made a resurgence in the 1969 among some Christian groups and the Amish. I had completely forgotten about my college roommate telling me about her brother dating an Amish girl in Pennsylvania and going through this ritual.
Can you even imagine giving this authentic type of courtship a try? The good news is I think it is very difficult to get a new acquaintance committed? At least I hope.....
