Let me set the stage: In 1890 a man took 33 months to ride a bicycle around the globe. After returning to Boston, two local business men wagered $10,000 that this feat could not be accomplished by a woman. Accepting the bet was Annie Londonderry. She is 24 years old and the mother of 3 (some say 6). She was 5'3 and weighed 100 pounds. She rode a bicycle for the first time a week before she took off on this adventure. She rode a 42 lb. Sterling bike with just the clothes on her back, a change of underwear, a pearl handled revolver and $100 she received for advertising on her bike.
She returned to Boston 15 months later (Far surpassing the 33 months of her male counterpart) earning her reward which would be $330,000 in today's dollars. Can you imagine? You can read the whole story HERE.
